Best piece of advice you have been given: Luck has nothing to do with it, put the hard work in the results will come.

Any pre match rituals: I try not to have any pre game rituals because its easy to get caught up in them and become superstitious.

Best thing about playing for Marist: The people, Marist is filled with good people and I love the place because of the people. When I play for Marist I represent these people and want to win for them.

When cleaning out a ruck - "Short Steps, Low Man Wins, Violent Act" - In that order.

Most respected Marist player: - Leper...No matter how many people told him to Flag it - he kept on going and breaking himself.

What would you normally eat prior to a game: - Eggs on Toast with melted cheese x 4 at least

Any pre match rituals: usually some fricken loud music in the car on the way to the park.

Best thing about playing for Marist: For the Most part - Its the same crew I've been playing with since Rosmini Days. Rosmini / marist Boys are loyal - you'll notice the ones that are in it for themselves don't play for us anymore - which is great. Too much history to remember and always a good yarn with a beer after the game.

Any advice for aspiring Rugby Players?: Yup - Society is changing and younger people are getting Lazier. Don't be too cool to put some effort into training outside of Tues / Thurs. Important people notice the ones that put in the extra effort....Oh Yeh....and don't listen to Steve Dooley!

Sam_Ward_2009Name: Sam Ward

Nickname: T-Rex (I got excited after scoring a try once and head butted the ball. Normally people throw it in the air so some of the boys thought my arms were too short to throw the ball past my large cranium, just like a T-Rex)

Secondary School Attended: Rosmini College

First Game for Marist: V Northcote 2006

Position: HookerPrems games to date: Around 30

Most Memorable Game in a Marist Jersey:
I'll never forget my debut or the day we played with the 3 All Blacks, but beating Northcote after coming back from a 20 point deficit with 20 mins to go was outstanding.

Representative Honours:
Harbour Schools 04, Hawkes Bay 07, NZ Marist Colts 08, NZ Universities 08/09.

Best piece of advice you have been given: 'All you need is right under the left tit' M. Reid, Circa 2006.

Most respected Marist Prems player and why: There are a many, but Damian 'Monster' Albert has the club record and was Captain the year I debuted. He is a quality player and leader who gets the job done and his after-match speeches deliver a deceptive amount of humour.

Tell us about your experiences with NZ Marist Colts and NZ Universities through being involved with Marist: I was able to Captain the NZ Marist Colts side in 2008 around the South Island. Being able to tour like that was an experience that cant be experienced very often these days. A huge personal highlight for me has been representing the NZU side for the past 2 years. We beat the USA side in 2008 and last year travelled through Malaysia, Hong Kong, and finished with a tour of Japan. Being able to experience different rugby cultures while embracing our own on tour was awesome. There is always a great on field/off field balance with the NZU side and that helps create great team environment and also helps put together some quality free-flowing rugby. There is also a good mix of amateur players to professional players in the side and the opportunity to play with quality players helps with my game also. If Marist wasnt the UNiversity club then I wouldnt have had these opportunities, something i will never forget and another example of what Marist as a club has done for me, something that I look forward to repaying with quality performances on the paddock.

Any pre match rituals: None as such, but I always take a moment with the jersey before I put it on, It helps me get in the zone and makes sure im prepared to earn the jersey.
Best thing about playing for Marist: The people, there are lifetime friends at the club and the family environment helps create an awesome atmosphere. The large number of Rosmini Old Boys helps stir up the same type of excitement as playing for the First XV but no matter who steps into a Saints jersey, there is always good passion come game time, and come song time!

Any advice for aspiring Rugby Players?: The prep work hurts, but winning in that jersey with your mates makes it all worth it.

Rich

Marist Loose Forward Richard Haddon continues his rise within NZ rugby ranks by today being announced in the NZ under 20's side to travel to Argentina, coached by Dave Rennie and Mark Anscombe.

Richard after having an injury plagued 2009 has hit 2010 with great enthusiasm on and off the field and his training ethic plus performances on the field have showed Rich as a face to watch!

Richard was awarded a scholarship to attend the 3 week High Performance course at IRANZ last year through the club which he thoroughly enjoyed! We look forward to tracking Rich's progression with the 20's and beyond and no doubt see some great things in a Saints Jersey also!!!
