Marist North Harbour Senior 2nd Spartans 2011

Date Report Photo Link
15th April 2011

On a lovely day for rugby at Albany, the Marist Senior 2nd Spartans got off to a slower start, leading by 7-0 at halftime; however things picked up in the 2nd half, and they scored a further 4 tries, converting 5 of the 6 total on the day.

Great to see this side arranging themselves to play the season in Marist colours, staying close to the top of the table.

Marist Senior 2nd Spartans 2011 - Photos

2011 has been a great year for the Marist Spartans.  2011 was the first year that the Marist Spartans have played together. Prior to the 2011 season kicking off a group of boys decided it would be a great idea to enter a rugby team with all their friends. The first mission was to bring all the players together, the second to find the funds and third to find a club.

Finding the players proved easy enough as many for keen to play with their mates. Players ranging from at least five of the clubs across the Harbour Competition and many coming from further afield just to play.  Almost as easily a sponsor was found who was willing to fund the beginning of the team.

Thirdly and most important was the club. Marist at Albany rose to the occasion magnificently. After the initial approach the club was quick to take us aboard and more importantly made us feel a part of the club, and thus our season as the Marist Spartans began.

Going into the season unsure of how we would compare to the other teams, the Spartans were quick to notch up two huge wins and confidence was at a high. As the season progressed we suffered front row player injuries which certainly narrowed the game margins. As it neared the business end of the season both with players coming back from injury and implementing a strong game plan we started to get back on top of the other teams and finished a strong third in the regular season.

With our confidence and motivation brimming we took to the finals with a fierce passion to win, and that’s just what we did. Taking the semi from the  Air force team the Spartans progressed to the final.

Having never beaten North Shore this was to be a huge task. We entered the game expecting to lead from the start. With a quick try in the first 5 minutes the Spartans never looked back and finished the game 22-17 and the Championship in the bag.
